As mothers, we want to erase struggles and problems that our children have to make it easier on them, but in this instance it was to my son’s benefit to learn more about himself and work together with me to find answers to what was making him struggle. What we found was the key that opened so many doors, but let me tell you the story behind all of this first.
At an early age I saw my son take an abundance of extra time to make things perfect, draw, color, build blocks, and tie shoes He seemed to focus on everything in such detail that hours passed by though would disregard what he found to be nonsense and avoided it to the extreme. I just thought that this is how he processed whereas his twin was quick and flourished in everything imaginable. I never compared them though I took into account just how different they were. I always knew there was a specific reason why my son needed extra time to do simple things that a lot of other children take for granted. Even simple things like answering a question, completing a task, doing homework, etc…took more time than usual. Schoolwork became a nightmare day after day. The frustration level was unreal for him and for me as a parent. All the patience, love, and understanding in the world did not solve the mystery of why he was struggling so much.
I did not know the extent of his difficulty until the dawning day came in 7th grade when a series of events revealed that he was, indeed, different than his classmates. The school had a sewage outbreak and the students and staff were dismissed until the mess was cleaned up for their safe return to class. Upon returning to class, it was within 15 minutes that I received a phone call from the school nurse saying that my son was not feeling well. When I arrived to pick him up I asked him what was wrong and he went on to tell me that his eyes were burning, his uvula was swollen and it was hard to swallow and he was dizzy and had a headache. I did the regular route of a doctor visit and had a strep test done and found nothing. He then felt fine an hour after leaving school. This went on for a week when I thought to seek another opinion so I took him to his ENT. They said it may be allergies but found nothing again. My son was falling behind in school and felt he was really sick. Well, he was. He complained of headaches, brain fog, was getting acne, anxiety, depression, sleeping issues, pain in the abdomen and bowel. He had dark circles under his eyes, alarming breath, white spots on his nails, loss of weight to the point of scary, and no energy. Each time that he would return to school I would get a phone call within an hour that he was not feeling well again. The school thought it was now psychosomatic and that he just did not want to be in school. He became very frustrated and felt that no one understood how sick he felt. His stress level was off the charts which I found later that stress was another major contributor to his health problems. It was then that I met a lady who mentioned “sick building syndrome” and recommended an environmental physician to me for my son. I made the appointment and this doctor found that my son was highly allergic to mold that could have grown in the school from the sewage outbreak and that he has a “SNP” (single-nucleotide polymorphisms) that other kids may not have which shows up in his reactions to his environment. A SNP is a misspelling in the DNA code and can affect how humans develop diseases and respond to pathogens, , drugs, vaccines, and other agents. Now, it was clear as to why he was reacting the way he did when he entered the school. The principle was entirely not interested in his diagnosis and did not want the EPA coming in as this would affect the budget of the school. I elected to remove both of my sons from the school and educate them elsewhere. Good thing I did. There was mold in many parts of the building and this would have affected their health greatly. My son’s health increased but there was definitely a processing issue when it came to schoolwork and the anxiety continued along with other issues that he developed after the school incident. This worried me greatly and I searched for answers online, through friends, books, etc… I was baffled how I could help my son. Thoughts raced through my head wondering if there was something I could have done earlier or when I was pregnant that could have changed this outcome. Well, yes, there was…more on that soon.
Well, answers came in time as I was led in a Divine direction in my career and became educated in DNA misspellings through a doctor. He asked me to work for him and I became an epigenetics health coach. Inspired by the silent causes of SNPs in my son and clients, I found that not only can SNPs be treated with nutraceuticals but food allergy finger prick testing was a HUGE eye opener on why my son was processing differently than the norm. It was the food he was eating along with his SNPs. Having my son tested along with the rest of the family was the smartest move I ever made. We found that he had double SNPs in MTHFR, MTRR, VDR, BHMT, and DAO. MTHFR is the top marker to be tested and I will go into detail on what MTHFR means later. We started him on Nutrigenomics, which is the combination of targeted nutraceuticals (supplements) and proper food according to his genetics. His speed in processing increased, confidence soared, skin irritations cleared up, migraines vanished, stomach aches subsided, he gained weight, and health increased. He now talks about his dramatic change to everyone, especially students. What a complete turnaround from the quiet guy he was!
When it comes to these type of health issues, your routine doctor visit seldom suggests testing on a genetic level for underlying causes if blood tests exhibit a “normal” range. So that means the mystery goes unsolved. The same may even be said for a diagnosis like fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue, and autoimmune diseases. It could go undiagnosed and is a quite treatable genetic issue that could be remedied simply through a cheek swab DNA test along with a food sensitivity finger prick test, nutraceuticals, and proper and personalized cellular nutrition. I bet you can understand my frustration with the typical health care system we have! We all have health predispositions in our DNA and we can now do something about it.This is why I am so passionate about educating my family, clients, and everyone I can touch on this type of testing. You have to take the power of your health into your own hands.
Thanks to the 4 billion dollar Human Genome Project, we can now identify individual genetic mutations and know what is going on in your body on a cellular level before health conditions develop. We now can prevent these conditions before they occur. We call this controlling your “gene expression”. Our genes are susceptible and there are gaps in the DNA code that can be “filled in” with proper nutraceuticals and nutrition.
This leads us to expecting mothers. The fetus is very sensitive to the mother’s stress level and her diet. If she is eating outside of her safe zone according to her genetics and food sensitivity it can create problems in development of the fetus. Published scientific literature documents article after article on how the methylation pathway is responsible for autism in unborn children. The numbers are now 1:68 that a unborn child will develop autism. We now have the knowledge and power to change that through education on genetics and methylation pathway disturbances. These numbers are disturbing and we have to be active in educating and implementing what we now know to prevent the rise in autism.
Circling back, MTHFR stands for methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase – an enzyme that activates folic acid by adding a methyl group to it. We all are familiar with folic acid that is in supplements or in food. .If you have a genetic mutation of MTHFR, it will lower your ability to methylate -it is important that you find out if you have this marker. If you are not methylating then your body is not turning one nutrient into another. The same can be said that you are not turning toxins into non-toxins, and managing the usage or expelling of them by the body. If your body does not activate folic acid then you are susceptible to, in my son’s case, chemical sensitivities, allergic reactions, anxiety, depression, stomach aches, acne, and insomnia. We can also mention that if we are not activating folic acid then we are susceptible to cancer, strokes, eye disease, diabetes, thyroid problems, and more. Folate in the oral form takes care of the folic acid that your body needs especially when you have a genetic enzymatic methlyation issue in MTHFR. You should be tested to see if you, in fact, have this genetic mutation as it can be remedied quite easily and deter problematic conditions that go along with this mutation in your DNA code. To help you understand what your cell cycle deems as necessary let’s start by taking into consideration what activated folate does. Activated folate (named 5MTHF) provides its methyl group to other nutrients and substances. We call this “methylation.” Your body requires this to create every cell in your body.Activated folate goes beyond the creation of cells. It is also used to produce energy, detoxify chemicals, process hormones, create and process dopamine, epinephrine, norepinephrine, and seratonin- neurotransmitters a cellular perspective. If you are under stress it can change the gene expression in your body and if not treated, disease switches can be turned on. Stress reduces the body’s ability to properly methlyate. This blocks the transfer of methyl from 5MTHF to other substances and your cell cycle becomes a bashed up assembly line with the end result being the decline of wellness. This is why it is important to know your genetic markers and treat them so that optimum health is achieved before conditions of illness set in. If you do not know then how can you treat yourself well? Stress can affect your health in so many ways. One way to manage stress even if you have not been tested yet is to make sure that you are managing stress on a cellular level and consider taking activated folate instead of folic acid.Your B complex vitamin should read “folate” or “methylfolate” instead of “folic acid.” The right form is crucial to your health.
This all makes sense as to why my son was feeling the way he was and what a amazing answer we found to his problematic core. His difficulties turned into a huge resource center of information that now can help others by educating them on their lifestyle according to their genetics.
To find out if you have an MTHFR mutation you can simply get a cheek swab test. In addition to this you should consider getting a finger prick food sensitivity test done as well to find out your food sensitivities so that you can avoid inflammatory foods that slow down the cycle of the cell and block your body from living in wellness.
Both tests can be done in less than an hour and you can contact me for these tests. Not only will you know your genetic mutations but will also discover what food to eat in abundance that are safe and beneficial for your body but also know what foods to eat in moderation or avoid all together to raise wellness. We will then go over your results and you can plan meals and supplement ordering accordingly and purposefully. The tests are relatively inexpensive and are not generally covered by insurance but worth the investment in your health. Just think of all the money you will save on future prescriptions and senseless food and supplement purchases by knowing your body’s needs on a cellular level let alone the alleviation of downtime from feeling ill. This can really add up.
When you take the power of knowing you into your own hands, you have just bypassed all the guesswork in choosing foods and supplements that you may THINK are good for you and confirmed whether they are or not. In turn, your body will thank you for it.
